Following a detailed review which included analysis of accidents, vehicle speeds, traffic flows and existing speed enforcement statistics, the A9 Safety Group developed a strategy of changes to improve driver behaviour along the route. This was broken down into three sections:

  • Dunblane to Perth
  • Perth to North of Inverness (Tore Roundabout)
  • North of Inverness to Thurso

With 36% of all car drivers exceeding the speed limit on the A9, the strategy had a strong focus on enforcement measures including both average speed cameras and mobile camera enforcement. Both elements of the enforcement strategy had a proven track record of reducing casualties as well as speed.

Camera Technology

The Average Speed Camera System deployed on the A9 is the SPECS3 incorporating the Portable Outstation Device.

There have been a number of engineering improvements completed on the A9 between Inverness and Thurso with further schemes also in the development phase.
