The A9 Safety Group strategy was developed around the analysis of the accidents on the route which produced the following statistics:

Dunblane to Perth

High severity of accidents at junctions

53% of right turn accidents are KSIs (Killed or Seriously Injured) compared to a North East unit average of 29%.

Higher number of accidents involving HGVs above 7.5 tonnes

17% involve HGVs compared to a North East unit average of 9%.

High number of single vehicle accidents striking roadside objects

The annual average daily traffic flow between Dunblane and Perth is approximately 25,000 vehicles per day. Cars make up 81.8% with all goods vehicles making up 17.4%.

Perth to North of Inverness (Tore Roundabout)

Higher number of accidents involving HGVs above 7.5 tonnes

HGVs above 7.5 tonnes are nearly 3 times more likely to be involved in an injury accident on single carriageways of the A9 (Perth to Inverness) than they are on any other Scottish trunk road single carriageways.

HGVs involved in 22.8% of accidents on single carriageway sections.

Goods vehicles under 7.5 tonnes are involved in 13.6% of accidents on single carriageway sections compared to a North West unit average of 7%

63% of all fatal accidents on this section of the A9 are head on accidents.

77% of all KSI accidents occurred on single carriageways

35% of all fatal accidents are related to overtaking.

The annual average daily traffic flow between Perth and Inverness vehicles per day varies from 22,500 around Perth, 8,500 near Pitlochry and 37,000 around Inverness. Cars make up approximately 80% with all goods vehicles making up 18%.

North of Inverness (Tore Roundabout) to Thurso

High severity of accidents at junctions

43% of right turn accidents occurred at a junction compared to a North West unit average of 26% Turning right manoeuvres are the most common vehicle manoeuvres in accidents

Failing to look properly, failing to judge other persons speed, careless/reckless and poor turning practices are the most common recorded contributory factors. 

The annual average daily traffic flow between North of Inverness (Tore Roundabout) to Thurso is approximately 6,000.

Heavy Goods Vehicle Statistics

HGVs above 7.5 tonnes are involved in nearly a quarter of all accidents on single carriageways on the A9 (Perth to Inverness) yet typically only make up 7% of the traffic. HGVs above 7.5 tonnes are nearly 3 times more likely to be involved in an injury accident on single carriageways of the A9 (Perth to Inverness) than they are on other Scottish trunk road single carriageway.
